Ok… so a little more about me, the addict

August 31, 2009 at 1:45 pm (FILM, TV)

So to explain why the post is so painful to write I need to tell you a little bit more about myself. I am the kind of person that is desperately trying to improve myself to be more well-rounded. I really love to learn new things (so this begs the question–why did you graduate college a year early?? I don’t know…) But recently I’ve been trying to become a better piano player, learn to play the guitar and a few other things. I’m also considering getting my MBA soon. So this weekend I went to a class to help me with my new love- rowing… sculling to be more accurate. And my hands and fingers hurt so bad today thus the pain. I went to two all-day classes Saturday and Sunday and man is that hard work. (and I only fell into the lake once!)

So I have been falling behind in my movie watching. These are the movies I want to see- Paper Heart, Adam, Taking Woodstock, and Inglorious Basterds plus Gamer, Extract and possibly All About Steve which looks really stupid to me.

Have I mentioned how great television is on Sunday nights? It’s so hard… my DVR can’t take it. First off is my favorite television show True Blood. Ah, Brilliant! And the last show of this season is in two weeks and I am super sad. But, then we get Bored to Death, HBO’s new show featuring the ever-awesome Jason Schwartzman. Then, there is a second season of Tool Academy. This show is so funny and last night definitely brought us some quotable lines- “she was pissed to her highest pistivity.” And then I also have Entorage, HGTV’s Design Star, ABDC…. did I tell you how hard this is on my DVR?

Update- OMG! I just saw this!!!

Just a quick update…

August 19, 2009 at 6:43 pm (HOLLYWOOD GOSSIP, MUSIC, TV)

I know that I have been slacking on blogging duties. It is just a really hard time right now. But for a quick, few line update…

TV Legend Don Hewitt lost his cancer battle today. He was 86…

I saw Time Traveler’s Wife and I wasn’t really impressed. It was fine, just not that great either. I found myself being easily distracted by Rachel McAdams mole under her mouth… weird, but they do close up on her face a lot….

Kourtney Kardashian is really milking this “I’m pregnant!” thing…

Jason Schwartzman wed his longtime girlfriend fashion designer Brady Cunningham on July 11. I’m really happy for them… I always loved Jason Schwartzman movies…

How scary is this?

Nicole Kidman + Project Runway = Greatness

Something kind of funny… thanks dumb “celebrities”…

Mariah is so self-less….

Just when you thought that Kim was going to let the spotlight rest on Kourtney… a Kardashian knows how to attract attention…

That’s what I got. Reminder- Season 6 of Project Runway starts tomorrow on LIFETIME. Check your local listings for more details… 😛

Jon minus Kate plus Eight = Damn Good Television? Years of therapy?

June 22, 2009 at 6:06 pm (HOLLYWOOD GOSSIP, TV)

So.. it’s official… well it’s on People so I say that’s official. Jon and Kate Gosselin have filed for divorce today. I am sure that is what is going to be on their “very special” special tonight at 7 pm on TLC. I would still probably check it out to make sure… I will that’s for sure.

I am sure this is no shock for anyone. When two people spend their 10th wedding anniversary apart from each other, you can only guess what was coming next. And honestly… Jon and Kate are both kind of repulsive so I don’t really feel bad for them. Kate was totally abusive to him for like the first however many seasons until this one. Then, what kind of douche (sorry to say that-but really) decides that while he is in the public eye to make out with 24-year-old girls before he files for divorce. Think about what those kids will see when they look back on this whole situation. That is who I feel sorry for. Those eight. They didn’t pick their parents…no one does, but when they ask about their parents divorce, they will have so much bombarded at them.I only hope they don’t get curious.

Here is the People link if you want to check it out.

Taking of Pelham 123 and True Blood

June 21, 2009 at 5:19 pm (FILM, TV)

So this movie got “eh” reviews. It has a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes so I was kinda apprehensive about seeing this one…thus I saw it a few weeks late. And I got to say that most of the other reviewers are right.

Taking is a remake of the 1974 Walter Matthau action-thriller about a transport agent Walter Garber (Denzel Washington) who becomes the hostage negotiator when Ryder (John Travolta) and his band of merry terrorists takeover a subway car. Basically, Ryder takes 19 people hostage and tells Gaber he’s got a hour to get him $10 million. From there, a whole bunch of other story lines come in as well as a slue of other characters including John Turturro and James Galdofini.

Ok… so this is basically like every other movie Denzel has done in the past well decade. In the past decade, the only Denzel movie I have liked was Spike Lee’s Inside Man. This movie, however, lacks the bite that Lee’s script had or the great twists it had. There is good dialogue between Denzel and John, but they tried to hard to pack so much action into the movie that it became a little ridiculous. This movie feels like an episode 24, but not as good.

My Rating:C   This movie is very “eh”-worthy. If you’re bored and want to see an action movie, you could go see this or see Star Trek again…. I’d recommend the latter.

So one of my favorite shows True Blood is back! And I am super excited. I actually don’t have HBO (I saw the first season at my then-boyfriend’s house and now that is the only reason I miss him- his HBO subscription!) but I am probably going to subscribe for like a couple of months and then cancel it.

The first episode of the second season was last Sunday and it had a great ratings. It drew in 3.7 million viewers, the highest number since The Sopranos‘ season finale in 2007. I have to say-I’m super glad that I am not the only person in love with this show.

The script and storyline is great! Based off of the Sookie Stackhouse Books aka Southern Vampire Series (Dead Until Dark is the first in the series with 9 in all), the series uses that as a basis, but be forewarned!- it does differ from the novels as seen in the first episode of this season.

The series is based around Sookie Stackhouse, a human waitress in Louisiana whose life is turned upside-down when Bill comes into town. Probably because Bill just happens to be a vampire and Sookie just happens to fall for him. The first season is filled with surprises because Bill is not the only one that has a special kind of life… 😉

This is one to catch up on. Check out the season 2 trailer below!

I’m back… with a vengence.

June 19, 2009 at 11:01 pm (BOOKS, FILM, HOLLYWOOD GOSSIP, TV)

So I’ve been gone! For two weeks! That feels insane. (I’ve had some stuff in my life change and I needed some time to figure out everything with that.) But, now I’m back! And, I’m going to stop writing choppy sentences! With Exclamation marks!

But to make it up to my five loyal readers (haha!), I’m going to have one massive post, hitting the highlights of the gossip, movies I’ve seen and other random stuff.

  • Gisele Bundchen is finally pregnant. (What? Like two months after she married Tom Brady? She moves fast) So she can finally stop talking about Bridget Moynahan’s son like it’s her own. Ok so I’m a little obvious about my stance about Gisele, but who cares?!? (Team Bridget!)
  • Twilight fans hit Robert Pattinson with a car! Ok… well not really but that sounds far more interesting than the actual story. In New York City, where Rob is filming his new movie Remember Me, Mr. Edward Cullen got mobbed by fans and tried to escape them by playing a personal game of Frogger and lost. He was “grazed” by a taxicab and walked away from the scene. See, my version was so much better.
  • A bunch of people are getting divorces… Billy Joel and his wife Whats Hername as well as The West Wing‘s Bradley Whitford and Malcom in the Middle‘s Jane Kaczmareck. Let’s face it- in Hollywood, the moment you say “I Do” the clock starts ticking…. eh, I am just waiting for Sean Penn and Robin Wright to try to divorce each other for another time. They are better than a soap opera.
  • By the way, Sean Penn says that he wants to take a break from acting to spend more time with his family… probably ending in separation number 3? 4? 18? I kid, I kid. At least, some people actually try to work out their problems. Stay together for the kids, guys.
  • This week, People Magazine named their hottest bachelor’s and on the cover….. CHACE CRAWFORD?!?!?!?!?! WHAT THE F***?!?!? Which leads me to write this letter….

Dear People Magazine,

You know how I adore you. I am a frequent buyer of your magazine at the check-out counters at my grocery store and I hit up your website like all the time. And, usually, I eat up each magazine with some fervor. You show us pictures of movie stars buying coffee in non-descript hoodies and buying ridiculous expensive clothing and write stories about Brangelina and whatnot and I totally love it! Plus, you usually choose some one extremely hot to be your “hottest bachelor” of the year. Like George Clooney, Matt Damon and the oh-so-right-choice of Hugh Jackman.

This year, YOU CHOOSE CHACE CRAWFORD?????? THE SCRAWNY KID FROM GOSSIP GIRL?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!! What the hell are you smoking? REALLY (…and where can I get some?)! Excuse me but this sucks @%@$$^# $^$#&^#@$^((#@^%! I would actually be ok with some one younger (me being 21) but honestly you have this completely wrong. You cannot follow up Hugh with Chace and that is a fact! I am sincerely disappointed. And I am going to campaign for Hugh or Ryan Reynolds or somebody hot in 2010!

With my love,

entertainmentaddict (ok.. I’m done)

When I saw My Life in Ruins, it ruined my night. I felt like a ruin by the time I left the movie theatre. This movie tries so hard to be My Big Fat Greek Wedding and totally fails on every point. Probably because it lacked John Corbett who brought some life to that film.

The story is about Georgia, a history teacher at a Greek university who loses her job and become a tour guide. Of course, she treats her tours like a lesson to a bunch of stupid Americans who only want to shop and eat ice cream who couldn’t care less about the ruins and history of Greece. There is also a love story that intertwines in the main story of finding happiness in whatever you do.

This movie totally sucks. I’m not going to lie. The flat characters gain no sympathy from the audience because they are all so obnoxious. The story is boring and predictable. And no matter, how much you want this to be another Big, Fat Greek Wedding– it is not. At all. Miss this one and save $10 on the ticket. I already wasted enough time on this movie.

My Rating: F  Awful…. just awful.

(instead of showing the trailer for this movie I am going to past the trailer for Where the Wild Things are, which looks amazing, and it is paired beautifully with the Arcade Fire’s Wake Up–this is the kind of trailer that makes me still believe in movies as a great storyteller-I can’t wait for the movie)

I went into this movie with a lot of hope. It looked like that kind of Little Miss Sunshine meets Juno with a discernible script. Plus, it is directed by Sam Mendes (Academy Award Winning Director of American Beauty and Revolutionary Road) and had John Krazsinki, who I love. How could it go wrong? Well, lemme tell you how…

The story is about Verona and Burt, a pregnant couple in search of a home to raise their soon-to-be newborn. When they find out their only close connection is up and leaving for Belgium, the couple plans a trip to find a place to plant roots, hopefully a place near some kind of family. The story follows them and all the bizarre people they meet up with on their trip as well as finding out more about the dynamic of their relationship.

The first real problem is that this movie is billed a comedy mainly. And, news flash!, it’s not. It is actually a movie that basically says that we are all screwed up from birth and we can thank our nut-job parents for that. That is pretty much the whole movie. Second, when I can figure out where they are going to end up 20 minutes into a movie, it kind of makes the journey pointless. Third, this movie is FAR more crude than you could ever guess, something I was not expecting. Plus, Maya Rudolph looked like she despised Krazsinki the entire movie. It made for their “love” to feel very forced. VERY DISAPPOINTED.

My Rating: D+   I expected more and was blindsided by what I got.

(so instead of this trailer-HARRY POTTER TIME!!!! 25 days people!)

I guess I should do all of the terrible movies together so….

Dear Entertainment Universe,

It’s me, Kara a.k.a entertainmentaddict. I know that you are super busy trying to make a fourth Mission Impossible and trying to give Miley Cyrus some sort of a career even though she is a terrible actress and singer, but I was wondering if I could ask one question. Did I do something wrong? Did I gossip too much or write a bad review or something? I just want to know why I have been punished by watching such a terrible movie. Year One was so unbelievably awful that I think I should just say that I am SUPER DUPER sorry for whatever I’ve done and promise that I will try not to do anything bad anymore. Please, please never make a movie this terrible again. I beg you supreme universe.

And I am not kidding…. 20 minutes into the movie, I just started playing on my cell phone-desperately trying to figure out how long this train wreck was (a painful 1 hour and 40 minutes). Avoid this movie like the plague… because I think this movie literally has it.

My Rating: Can I give anything lower than an F? F————-? G? Z?

After all that crap, it could probably turning you off of movies all together. Not me. So when my friend asked me if I wanted to see The Proposal Thursday at midnight, I was down. Then to find out we were seeing it in the Cinemark version of an IMax, I was excited. And this movie did not disappoint! FINALLY!

Margaret is a no-nonsense book editor, well she is a no-personality book editor to be frank about it. Andrew is her dutiful assistant that suffers through his job, trying to making editor. When Margaret finds out that she is being deported back to her native land of Canada, she plots a scheme to keep her job- defraud the US Government by marrying her assistant to stay at the company. When she and Andrew go back to his home state of Alaska, things start to get interesting.

I have been so disappointed in romantic comedies in the past couple of years; I thought that that genre may be fading out or a least becoming a gimmick. I have new found faith with this movie. It is funny and the two stars (Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds) have an amazing chemistry. Is this the best romantic comedy ever? No, not even close. Is this the best new romantic comedy in the past five years? Maybe. And my love for Ryan Reynold has deepened with this movie.

My Rating: B  A good movie that doesn’t make you feel ueber depressed by the end of it.

And that’s it for my movie reviews. As far as books go, I read Watchmen in the past couple of weeks and I have to say I didn’t like it. It was exactly like the movie (or visaversa) and I didn’t like the movie.  Maybe I am not a graphic novel kind of girl.

  • Paris Hilton has started searching for her best friend in Dubai. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE GOD let my MTV have that show. PLEASE. She is my favoritest train wreck!
  • Aparrently there is going to be a big announcement on Jon and Kate + 8 this coming Monday. And if it is that they are separated, I am going to be totally sad because we pretty much already know that.
  • And if you haven’t been surfing the entertainment sites and want to be surprised about the Grey’s Anatomy cliffhanger surf away from my page NOW!
  • Please….
  • My post is done besides this news
  • Don’t blame me if you really dont want to know.
  • I am trying very hard
  • OK!
  • SO…. TR Knight has gotten out of his contract but Katherine Heigl has signed on for another season. So fans you better say your goodbyes to George O’Mailey because he got off that elevator to heaven or something and Izzie Stevens is getting a ride back down to earth. Unless she just becomes a ghost for an entire season. Hey if Jeffrey Dean Morgan can do it, so can she.

YAY! for being back!!!! See you folks soon (and I promise- not in two weeks… I really do not need to be writing this much in one post

Movie Review- Up!

June 2, 2009 at 6:57 pm (FILM, HOLLYWOOD GOSSIP, TV)

So Monday I decided to see the new Disney Pixar film Up! It had such great reviews and while I am not a big animation fan, I still wanted to check it out. I was determined to not have a completely bad time, so I went to the Drafthouse so I could have a good lunch and so I could see it in 3-D.

The story of Up! is about Carl Fredricksen, a life-long adventurer who happens to find his soul-mate when he is young and the beginning of the movie is a montage of their lives together. They get married and you discretely figure out that she is unable to have children (discretely meaning I don’t think the kids in the audience figured that out). The montage ends with her passing away at an old age and Carl is all alone. This part almost made me cry; it was so sad and sweet.

Carl then decides to take his house and himself on an adventure that he promised to take his wife on. And he accedntially take a young wilderness adventurer with him. From there, the story takes off and the 3-D gets really cool. The story is a great one for kids- its about life being the real adventure and treasuring the ones you love.

And for a person who doesn’t like animated movies, I really enjoyed this one. Kids will love the 3-D and adults will love the story. (Trust me… you’ll cry… like a baby). The characters are well-developed and while the story gets a little sidetracked in the middle, I think this is one that most people will enjoy.

My Rating: B+  It is a good movie folks and I graded higher because I was entertained and I don’t like animated movies.

  • Shocker! Spencer and Heidi have already quit “I’m a Celebrity, get me out of here!” after one episode. Apparently they didn’t realize that there was camping, wilderness and no hair gel on this show. Hum… I guess this reality show had a little bit too much reality for them. Daniel Baldwin will join his brother Stephen on the show to make up a killer duo.
  • On the nobody cares report, Miley Cyrus signed up for a fourth season of Hannah Montana. **crickets, crickets** Ok moving on…
  • Paris Hilton is now finding friends all over the world. She has just signed on for My New BFF- Dubai. With her US BFF and UK BFF, I think Paris could probably work out this whole Middle East mess through reality television… until she calls them gold-digging hos and dumps them for another chihuahua. Eh.. at least we can always depend on Paris.
  • Finally, Conan O’Brien has taken over The Tonight Show and it was already hilarious. His opening montage made me almost cry. I’m excited for someone actually funny to host that show! (All Jay Leno fans, please don’t flog me for that)

COMING SOON- Hopefully, I will see Drag Me to Hell this week. As far as other movie news, Land of the Lost, Away We Go, The Hangover and My Life in Ruins comes out this Friday so expect some reviews! ALSO, I plan on discussing Jon v. Kate vs. 8- who is really losing this public debate… spoiler- I think the kids are the better public speakers.

CHECK OUT- Devendra Banhart’s “Lover”- funky music that is good to relax to (if you recognize the name but can’t place it, he used to date Natalie Portman last year.)
