Was Funny People supposed to be funny?

July 31, 2009 at 11:02 pm (FILM)

Was Funny People supposed to be funny? Cause if it was, I missed that. But lemme start with a little summary before I go into that.

Funny People is about a bromance (what else would come from Judd Apatow) between a big time comedian that makes crappy movies, Adam Sandler…. I mean Sandler playing George Simmons… well really playing himself, and a up-and-coming comedian that he asks to write him joke and be his assistant. George feels like he needs to find himself again after being diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia and starts doing stand up. Once he goes into remission, he decides to try and reconnect with an old flame as well.

Um… if that description seems odd and jumping around. it’s because that is what the movie is like. So for a movie with “funny” in the title, this movie really isn’t that funny… really it’s depresssing and really, really long. It was over 2 hours and it felt like it. Plus, you really don’t have any sympathy for any character in this movie. They are all kind of a-holes. So by the end, you don’t care what happens… you just want it to end. Ok…the stand-up is funny, but I can watch Comedy Central for that. The movie itself is lame and is really the same stuff that Judd Apatow shoves down our throats. Apatow is a one-trick pony and this movie really shows it.

My Rating: D   This movie left me in a terrible mood. I would not recommend it.

So I typically don’t post about my personal life on here, but I am just putting one thing out there. I am a recent college graduate looking for a marketing or public relations job. I am not having the greatest luck right now. It really does not matter where, I just want a job so if you know of anything or have any ideas of where to look, please help an addict out….

Gossip Radar…. powering on.

July 29, 2009 at 10:23 pm (HOLLYWOOD GOSSIP)

So I think that Thursday are now going to be my day to gossip… well, the day that I also blog the gossip. I figure I can start out with what I know and I’ll add updates when needed. Why not? So here is what I got….

After weeks of talking about what will happen to Michael Jackson’s three children, Prince, Paris and Prince II, Katherine Jackson and Debbie Rowe have come to an agreement. His mother will have  sole custody of the children, while Rowe, mother of Prince and Paris, not Prince II, will have visitation rights. I hope we can soon let his family be in peace.

Only one movie since the “Jacob” switch talk, Summit throws a (pardon my french) BITCHSLAP to actress Rachelle Lefevre (Victoria in the movies). Summit announced today that they were recasting the role with Bryce Dallas Howard (Ron’s daughter), saying that Lefevre had a scheduling conflict. While this was a shock to me, it must of been a huge shock to Lefevre, who was told by the media about this little switch. “I was stunned,” says Lefevre in a statement. “I was fully committed to the Twilight saga.” Lefevre also said that she had turned down other roles to make time for Eclipse. “I am hurt deeply by Summit’s surprising decision to move on without me,” she says. Wow Summit, that was classy. But, I cannot wait to hear about Robert Pattinson trying to hook up with the married and mother of one Howard…

According to Entertainment Weekly, Jude “Sure, I’ll hit that” Law is going to be a father again. Already of father of three, Law is going to have another one with a mystery woman. “Jude Law can confirm that, following a relationship last year, he has been advised that he is to be the father of a child due in the fall of this year,” the actor’s rep says in a statement. “Mr. Law is no longer in a relationship with the individual concerned but he intends to be a fully supportive part of the child’s life. This is an entirely private matter and no other statements will be made.” I really want to know who the mother is… but I bet Sienna Miller is glad she got out of Jude’s clutches.

Ok so it’s not really Beyonce versus Kelly Clarkson, but it’s certainly a mess. Kelly Clarkson’s new song Already Gone, which she co-wrote with One Republic‘s Ryan Tedder, sounds a lot like Beyonce’s Halo (which was written by Tedder). Clarkson spoke up on a Canadian radio station about her displeasure with Tedder for pawning off another one of his songs to her and with her record company for releasing the song as a single (and making her look like she is stealing for the other singer). Here are the two videos… see what you think…

Kelly Clarkson’s Already Gone

Beyonce’s Halo

Personally, I think Tedder got called on his BS. Good for you Kelly. But her record company doesn’t share my comments. They are displeased with her publicly talking about this matter and are threathening to stop promoting her album All I Ever Wanted and her tour as punishment. I think you can judge this one for yourself…

I'm a gonna go squirrel hunting...

I'm a gonna go squirrel hunting...

Cause if you have, you just saw Johnny Depp at Comic Con. Yup, that’s Johnny. And, I am forever going to chase down people in squirrel costumes just in case it’s him. That is the hottest squirrel I’ve ever seen and I have seen my fair share (PS- Johnny, if you want to be sneaky, take your personalized badge off…just a thought)

Famous for no reason Kim Kardashian and NFL star Reggie Bush broke up…

Actress Camilla Belle and Idol of Every 13-year-old girl Joe Jonas broke up…

Bachelorette Jillian Harris choose tiny green shorts… I mean Ed Swiderski… (I suggest you keep your last name Jillian. His is a mouth-full)

Singer LeAnn Rimes and her husband Dean Sheremet are calling it quits after seven years of marriage and rumors of her chasing after Eddie Cibrian…

Cowboy Tony Romo ditched Singer Jessica Simpson but is not dating the daughter of Eastern Illinois University’s Athletic director (Natalie Smith)… that guy gets around…

Jon Gosselin hooked up with every 22-year-old he saw this week…

and that’s a wrap.

My Updates on My Summer Goal

July 29, 2009 at 4:01 pm (FILM)

So like I posted about a month ago, I am trying to see all of the movies on the user-rated IMDB.com top 250 movies. Well I’m making headway and I am super excited about my project. For the first half of and really most of July, I hadn’t made any progress. I got into a real roll in June and then, life caught up to me. But I’m trying to get back into the project again. I love movies so much I’m willing to sacrifice watching Mamma Mia and Juno for the 15th time on HBO.

Recently, I’ve watched All About Eve. I actually held on to this Netflix DVD for like a month… it got ridiculous. So I finally sat down and watched it one night. It was really good, but a little long. I loved Bette Davis–she was fabulous and a total witch–LOVED IT! Then I watched Let the Right One In on Netflix Instant Movies. This is a Swedish vampire film and really pretty good. It lags at points and the subtitles are hard on the eyes on the computer screen, but surprisingly a really sweet story at the gore. But beware–its really bloody. I then got The Philadelphia Story from Netflix. NOW! This one I loved!!! I completely understood Katherine Hepburn and felt like I totally new her. Plus Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart—so good and so funny! If you haven’t seen this one, go rent it or get on your Netflix.

So if you haven’t guessed, this post is a little bit of Netflix ad–and not because I’m being paid or anything, but because it is amazing. If you would want to watch more than three movies on DVD a month, then you are saving money. Plus, their instant movies gives you so much instantly. I pay less than $9 a month for all of these features and I can’t believed I went this long without. I’m actually going to go look at my instant movies right now to watch something. I LOVE NETFLIX!

Ok, ok… I’m kidding, but I have to post these clips…

(OH! You might need a little preficis to get what this means. New Moon is the second book and movie of The Twilight Saga–so you will probably be hearing 14-year-old girls constantly talking about this until November and then talking about how awesome it was afterwards.  And it will get worse as November nears or as the cast does press like this past week. Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner are the three stars of the films and they play the age-old love triangle of human girl trying to choose between the vampire and werewolf. So last week the three of them went to Comic-Con [comic book and now action film convention] and they debuted two new clips from Moon}

These clips look like they were taken on camera phone, but totally worth it. Not because of the actual clips (they are ok, though), but because of the girls taking it’s commentary… it’s hilarious! BEWARE there is lots of screaming

Clip 1

Clip 2

Hahaha… ok all kidding aside, these clips make the movie seem less terrible than I thought. Not good by any means, but not awful. Hey, like I always said, I’m seeing it.

I know. I know. I’ve been gone…but I’m back!!!

July 26, 2009 at 9:07 pm (FILM)

Sorry once again for being gone too long. My plans changed… many times and than a possible job opportunity popped up and more movies came out and I had so much to do and I really good friend of mine got married twice and I was part of the house party and…..welcome to the whirlwind that is my brain. So now I’m back. And I have seen 3, yes 3 movies and I am here to update.

So I’ve been waiting for this movie for like 2, maybe 3 years. Ever since I saw Order. Even in anticipation, I watched the first five movies and then read books 6 AND 7. Yes, I know how nerdy that sounds, but you would be shocked to know how many people do that….you probably did it or at least thought about. Come on…admit it. So come Tuesday night, I was ready. Oh was I and apparently I wasn’t the only one. (Imagine the costumes I saw come midnight…)

Half-Blood Prince picks literally where Order of the Phoenix left off. Harry is distraught at the death of his godfather, Sirius, and then goes off to spend the summer alone in London. When Dumbledore takes Harry with him to retrieve a new teacher, the “Chosen One’s” new mission just begins. This movie also chronicles Draco Malfoy’s coming of age as well as the three friends. Plus, there are new love interests in this movie.

Ok… I have to say I was disappointed in this one. I know that I must have hyped it up so much, but this movie is nothing like the book. It follows the same basic story line, but not a scene in this movie is the same in the book. The movie really focuses on the love relationships, but it misses important memories that Harry sees in the book; these memories delve into the history of Tom Riddle and family and how he became Voldemort. And while I know you cannot put everything in the book into the movie, these memories are CRITICAL for the seventh movie. I mean these memories give Harry a path to follow. Now without thinking about the book, the film has really funny moments and is beautifully shot. Seeing the three characters so old makes me feel like they have grown up with me. So that’s all good, but I am still seriously disappointed.

My Rating:  C     As much as I wish I could discount the book, I can’t and the book is way better.

(500) DAYS OF SUMMER- (PG-13)

I have to admit– I love Joseph Gordon-Levitt. I think he is a really good actor and super cute so (again) I was excited to see this one. Plus, Zooey Deschanel is adorable. This movie just looked so good and I made sure to see it on opening day.

So this movie is about Tom and Summer and as our all-too-poignant narrator points out— this is not a love story. But then again, it is about love–about how love comes and goes but in the end, it’s more about finding the right love. So the story starts with Tom and Summer’s break-up and flashes back to different points in their relationship to see how they came to this point.

This movie was super cute and makes you really happy to watch it. There are some serious laugh out loud moments but it’s not all laughs. It really shows all parts of the relationship-the good and the bad. Levitt didn’t disappoint and Deschanel was very good. It is the kind of movie that is not going to change the world, but you are at least going to have a good time and won’t feel terrible at the end.

My Rating:  B   FINALLY! A movie that I was really excited for that did not disappoint.

So I managed to get some tickets to a sneak preview of this movie last Friday (I know I am terribly late with this post). Again, I was excited for this one, but I was worried that I would be disappointed because of the awesomeness of 500 Days. Seeing two movies in one day can sometimes spoil the second one.

The Ugly Truth is about Abby, a producer of a rating-suck of a news program. When her boss decides to hire the local PBS sex talk show host to spice up the show, Abby’s intigrity goes out the window. Abby starts to fall for her hot doctor neighbor, but can’t figure out how to get him. When Mike offers his advice, they place a bet on it. They soon to find a sort of friendship in their deal and more begins to develop.

This is a pretty funny movie…I have to say. But I might have somewhat of a skewed vision of this movie. Sneak previews are always a lot of fun and movies seem funnier there. Its like a magical place. Again… this movie is funny, but not going to change your life by any means. Either way 2 hours of Gerard Butler… yummm.

My Rating:  C+   It is a fun Friday night… stop taking it so seriously.

Sorry I promise I will try and post more frequently!

2 Movie Reviews and My Picks for the best and worst films for the first half of 2009

July 9, 2009 at 12:29 am (Uncategorized)

I have been truant yet again and I apologize. Just got caught up in the holiday weekend. So here are a few movie reviews and my picks for the BEST and WORST movies for the first half of 2009.

So I didn’t have much expectations from the film going in. I knew it was Jessica Biel and that dude from Prince Caspian…oh yea and COLIN FIRTH (yummy). I also read in one of those lovely Angelika movie brochures that it was “a romp” so I was in.

Set in the 1920s, Easy Virtue is about John (Ben Barnes), a young English gentleman, who brings home his new American wife Larita (Biel) to the utter dismay of his mother (the wonderful Kristin Scott Thomas). Larita tries to fit into her uptight, new surroundings and obey her mother-in-law, but she soon finds that that might be impossible. A battle of wits ensue and the battle for John begins, but his mother may have more tricks up her sleeve than Larita expected.

This script is brilliant with some great lines and really funny characters. The butler “Furber” (Kris Marshall) is hilarious and Biel really shows her acting chops and proves her comic timing. The energy between Biel, Firth and Thomas is great and they really work well together. Another plus is that this movie is only 97 minutes so if it is not your cup of tea, it is blissfully short.

My Rating: B   This is a great, sharp comedy that will brighten your day.

This one I was super exited for this one. It has Johnny Depp, Chrisitan Bale and an interesting back story. I actually saw this movie right after I saw Easy Virtue, which I really enjoyed so I was hoping for the same experience. I expected to like it because the trailer was so good and the music with it was perfect.

Based on the life of American gangster John Dillinger, the movie follows the outlaw after he got out of his first stint in prison. It chronicles his meeting Billie Frechette, his love interest, and the FBI trying to track him down. On the FBI side, the movie also chronicles Melvin Pervis, the lawman who is in charge of tracking down the criminal.

Well… I don’t know how I feel about this one. I think it is one of Christian Bale’s best piece of acting. I felt Depp was a little aloof and not really in this one… in my opinion. I thought the music was TERRIBLE. Just awful. The story was ok and I thought the movie was fine… just not all what I expected it to be. I wanted something better, but it was decent none the less. Sorry that review was choppy.

My Rating:  C+    I feel like I need to see this one again. Maybe I would like it better. I just was disappointed the first time around.

So in my opinion the BEST movies this year (so far) and in no real order-

Star Trek

The Hangover

Easy Virtue

17 Again (cute Zac Efron film that had a lot of heart and great comic timing)

Year One (top 5 worst movies of all time in my book)

My Life in Ruins

Watchmen (god… give me my three hours back!)

My Bloody Valentine 3D (this movie made me nausious and it wasn’t the 3D)

I Love You, Man (I’m so over this whole plot line that is the same in every Judd Apatow movie….)

I am sure my picks aren’t yours, but hey it is totally my blog. And now the movies I’m looking forwar to!

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (7/15)

500 Days of Summer (7/17)

The Ugly Truth (7/24)

Julie and Julia (8/7)

GI Joe (8/7)

The Time Traveler’s Wife (8/14)

Gamer (9/4)

Shutter Island (10/2)

Whip it! (10/9)

Where the Wild Things Are (10/16)

The Box (10/30)

New Moon (11/20) …. bahahaha

Nine (11/25)

Brothers (12/4)

The Lovely Bones (12/11)

Sherlock Holmes (12/25)

All of the other great movies in between…

I hope to post soon, but we shall see… I am planning to be out of town this weekend so it might be another little bit.
